Sion Airport sits unusually close to some of Switzerland’s best-known ski destinations, but choosing a resort based only on distance can be misleading.
Crans-Montana offers the simplest and shortest arrival of the three destinations compared here. Verbier requires a longer mountain-road journey but is particularly attractive for groups, advanced skiers and travellers interested in après-ski. Zermatt offers an entirely different experience: the resort is car-free, so any road journey from Sion must finish at Täsch before travellers continue into Zermatt by train.
There is another important consideration for winter 2026/27: being close to Sion Airport only helps if your flight actually lands there.
Sion is an important airport for business aviation, charter and private aviation, but it does not currently operate the kind of dense scheduled winter network available at Geneva or Zurich.
So if Sion is already part of your itinerary, which resort makes the most sense?

The best option therefore depends less on which resort appears closest on a map and more on how you want the entire arrival to work.
First: Can You Actually Fly to Sion in Winter 2026/27?
This is the first question international travellers should answer.
Sion Airport is geographically well positioned for Valais ski resorts, but its scheduled passenger network is much smaller than Geneva’s or Zurich’s.
As of September 2026, the airport’s publicly listed scheduled service includes a seasonal Helvetic Airways route to Palma de Mallorca running from late May until 8 October 2026. A broad scheduled winter 2026/27 network comparable with Geneva has not been published.
That does not make Sion irrelevant for winter travel.
The airport is particularly useful for:
- private aviation;
- business aviation;
- charter operations;
- travellers with a confirmed seasonal service;
- passengers already travelling within Switzerland or the Valais region.
For travellers arriving by private or charter aircraft, Sion can significantly reduce the amount of road travel required after landing.
For travellers still choosing flights, however, it is important to compare Sion with Geneva before assuming that the closest airport will also provide the easiest overall itinerary.

Crans-Montana: The Simplest Arrival from Sion Airport
If your priority is the easiest resort arrival after landing in Sion, Crans-Montana has a strong advantage.
Crans-Montana Tourism lists Sion International Airport at approximately 30 kilometres from the resort.
Unlike Zermatt, there is no mandatory transfer point outside the village. Unlike Verbier, the road journey is also shorter and involves less time travelling deeper into the mountains.
For a traveller who lands at Sion and wants to reach accommodation with as little additional logistics as possible, Crans-Montana is therefore difficult to beat.
Getting to Crans-Montana after landing in Sion
By road, the journey travels through the Rhône Valley before climbing from the Sierre area onto the Crans-Montana plateau.
Public transport is also possible.
A typical journey involves reaching Sion railway station, travelling by train to Sierre and then continuing uphill by funicular or bus.
The funicular from Sierre is particularly useful because it connects the valley directly with the resort without requiring travellers to manage a mountain road themselves.
For guests carrying several suitcases, ski bags or travelling with young children, however, each additional transport change is worth considering.
A private road journey avoids the train-to-funicular handover and can continue directly to a road-accessible hotel, residence or chalet.

Who is Crans-Montana best for?
Crans-Montana is particularly attractive for:
- families who want a relatively straightforward resort arrival;
- shorter ski breaks;
- travellers landing later in the day;
- groups carrying substantial luggage;
- private aviation travellers wanting to minimise onward road time;
- mixed-ability ski groups.
The resort’s position on a broad plateau also creates a different atmosphere from the steeper valley setting around Verbier or the car-free environment in Zermatt.
One important winter 2026/27 consideration
Crans-Montana is scheduled to host the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships from 1 to 14 February 2027.
That makes February 2027 particularly important for travel planning.
The event does not mean the resort should be avoided, but accommodation demand, traffic, event operations and access around competition areas may differ from a normal winter week.
Travellers visiting during those dates should arrange transport and accommodation earlier than usual.
Verbier: Best for Advanced Skiing, Groups and Après-Ski
Verbier requires a longer road journey from Sion than Crans-Montana, but for many travellers the resort itself is the reason to choose it.
Verbier is part of the 4 Vallées ski area and is especially well known for advanced terrain, freeride skiing, international visitors and a strong après-ski and nightlife scene.
For groups arriving through Sion — particularly by private aviation — the road journey can still be practical enough for a weekend or short Alpine stay.
How does the Verbier arrival work?
Verbier is road-accessible.
A road vehicle does not have to stop at Le Châble before reaching the resort, provided the final hotel, residence or chalet can be accessed normally by road.
Le Châble is still an important transport hub.
It connects regional rail services with Verbier and provides access to the gondola system. Travellers using public transport will commonly pass through Le Châble before continuing uphill.
That means there are effectively two arrival patterns:
Road arrival: continue directly towards Verbier and the final road-accessible address.
Rail arrival: continue through Martigny to Le Châble and then use the gondola, bus or another onward connection.

Who is Verbier best for?
Verbier is a particularly strong choice for:
- advanced and experienced skiers;
- freeride-oriented trips;
- groups of friends;
- travellers prioritising après-ski and nightlife;
- luxury ski holidays;
- private aviation groups arriving through Sion.
Families can also choose Verbier successfully, but accommodation location becomes more important.
A road-accessible hotel with a straightforward drop-off creates a different arrival experience from a chalet with more complicated local access.
This is why the final address matters when planning any private journey to Verbier.
Zermatt: The Iconic Car-Free Choice
Zermatt is the most distinctive arrival of the three because private road vehicles cannot drive into Zermatt village.
For a road journey from Sion Airport, the destination is therefore not your Zermatt hotel.
It is Täsch.
From Täsch, travellers continue into Zermatt using the rail connection.
This distinction is important because many travel websites describe a “transfer to Zermatt” using a single driving time without explaining that the road portion ends outside the resort.
Sion Airport to Zermatt means Sion Airport to Täsch first
Indicative road-planning sources generally place Sion Airport to Täsch at roughly 75–80 kilometres, with good-condition journey estimates commonly around an hour to an hour and a quarter.
Those figures should remain planning ranges, particularly in winter.
Traffic, snow, road conditions and peak ski arrival days can all affect the journey.
Once you arrive in Täsch, the travel system changes.
The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn shuttle connects Täsch with Zermatt, and Zermatt Tourism states that the rail journey takes approximately 12 minutes.
Travellers should therefore plan for:
- arrival in Täsch;
- unloading passengers and luggage;
- moving ski equipment and suitcases to the rail connection;
- travelling into Zermatt;
- completing any final hotel or local electric-vehicle connection.

Who is Zermatt best for?
Zermatt is an excellent choice for travellers who value:
- the Matterhorn setting;
- a car-free mountain village;
- high-altitude skiing;
- couples and luxury leisure trips;
- families who appreciate a car-free resort once they arrive;
- a destination experience that is worth an additional arrival step.
The trade-off is logistical.
For a family with children, ski bags and several large suitcases, the mandatory change in Täsch creates more handling than a direct road arrival in Crans-Montana or Verbier.
The car-free environment may make the resort easier once you are there, but it makes the arrival itself more complex.

There is no single winner for every traveller.

This is also why comparing resorts purely by kilometres does not tell the full story.
A shorter journey that requires several transport changes may be less convenient than a slightly longer direct road journey.
Travelling With Skis, Children and Multiple Suitcases
Ski travel often involves more luggage than passenger numbers suggest.
Four people may mean:
- four suitcases;
- ski or snowboard bags;
- boot bags;
- hand luggage;
- helmets;
- children’s equipment.
That can change the correct vehicle choice.

This is especially important for Zermatt because everything eventually has to be unloaded at Täsch.
For Verbier and Crans-Montana, a correctly selected vehicle can usually continue directly to a road-accessible final address.
What Changes in Winter 2026/27?
Winter opening dates differ between the three resorts and should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every lift or piste will operate from the first published day.
Verbier
Official Verbier 4 Vallées information currently lists the Verbier–Ruinettes sector from 7 November 2026 to 25 April 2027, with some November operations dependent on conditions.
The wider 4 Vallées winter programme opens progressively rather than as one single all-area date.
Crans-Montana
Current resort information lists the principal ski season from 19 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, with possible partial opening from 28 November 2026 if conditions allow.
The 2027 Alpine World Ski Championships from 1–14 February will be an additional planning factor.
Zermatt
Matterhorn Paradise currently lists a winter ski-pass period from 1 November 2026 to 3 May 2027, although individual areas and lift systems have their own operating dates.
That is especially important in a high-altitude destination such as Zermatt, where glacier access and the complete resort ski network do not necessarily follow identical schedules.
Before travelling, always check current lift and weather information directly with the destination.
Is Sion Better Than Geneva for These Resorts?
If you already have a confirmed flight, charter or private aviation arrival into Sion, the airport can be exceptionally convenient for Valais.
Crans-Montana, Verbier and Täsch are all much closer to Sion than they are to Geneva.
But this does not mean every international traveller should automatically search for a flight to Sion.
Geneva has a much larger scheduled network and remains the more realistic commercial-flight gateway for many visitors travelling from the UK, Europe and long-haul markets.
A useful way to think about the choice is:
If the flight already works to Sion, take advantage of the shorter Alpine ground journey.
If getting to Sion requires an inconvenient or unavailable flight, compare the complete journey through Geneva instead.
